The Catholic Church in Northern Ghana, marked the centenary of its existence this year. The year-long celebration was brought to a close with a pontifical Mass which was celebrated on Monday, 23rd April 2007 at Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Minor Basilica at Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese.

Many Papal awards were given to deserving persons in the diocese. Among the recipients of the awards is the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, who received the Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice, for the selfless service which the sisters have rendered in the diocese over the years. Mary Assumpta Aamagr, SHCJ received the award on behalf of the society.

The award was presented by the Papal Legate at the occasion, His Excellency, Ivan Cardinal Dias, President of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. A good number of the SHCJ sisters in Ghana attended the celebration including Elizabeth Mgbaramuko, SHCJ who is presently missioned to Bauchi in Nigeria. Elizabeth, who had worked in the diocese as the Bishop’s Secretary for three years, was invited by the Bishop of Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, Most Rev. Lucas Abadamloora. This invitation was a gesture of his immense appreciation of the work which Elizabeth had done in the diocese.

Nora Sweeney, SHCJ esteemed in Ghana

Saint Peter’s Regional Seminary at Pedu in Cape Coast, Ghana, recently celebrated the Golden Jubilee of its existence as an institution of priestly formation. Sister Nora Sweeney was one of the guests who were specially invited by the seminary authority to participate in the event. Nora had taught Scriptures and Greek in the seminary for twelve years (1980 to 1992) while helping with the organization of the seminary library.

At the celebration, Nora was praised for her contributions as a staff of the seminary and for the indelible impact she made on the students and staff at the time. She was highly commended for sparing her time to be present at the celebration.
