All who call or come to the Society’s American Province Office in the afternoons are greeted by the welcoming smile and voice of Sr. Margaret Mullin. Few are aware that the flexibility she brings to the front desk has been developed by more than 50 years of varied ministries. (Located in Drexel Hill, Pa., the American Province Office handles the administrative aspects of the Province such as human resources, finance, development, and communications.)
After professing her vows in the Society of the Holy Child in 1953, Sr. Margaret spent 27 years teaching in almost every area where the Sisters of the Holy Child have served in the U.S. including Philadelphia, Pa.; Melrose, Mass.; Portland, Ore.; and Waukegan, Ill.
A New Ministry
During her five years as a pastoral minister at St. Dismas in Waukegan, Ill., Sr. Margaret grew to love visiting the sick. Her desire to be better prepared for this ministry led her to take a CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) course and do several months of service as a homemaker and health aide in Pennsylvania’s Montgomery County.
From there, Sr. Margaret moved to Cape May Courthouse, N.J. and spent six fruitful years as a member of the Holy Redeemer Home Nursing Team. In 1996, she was called to the staff of Holy Child Center, a retirement facility for the Sisters of the Holy Child, where her expertise was needed. For three years, Sr. Margaret lovingly cared for our elderly sisters.
When her energy was no longer a match for the demands of nursing, Sr. Margaret was offered the post of part-time receptionist at the office. She has been happy these eight years, as she serves the Society she so dearly loves. Any member of the staff will tell you that Sr. Margaret is always ready to lend a helping hand and is also always concerned about how everyone is doing. One staff member comments, “When Sr. Margaret asks how you are doing, she isn’t just being polite. She really wants to know. She cares.”
All her former rich experiences as a teacher, pastoral agent, and health aide enable Sr. Margaret to relate warmly to all who call or stop into the office.
