For more than 100 years, the Sisters of the Holy Child served the parish of St. Edward and St. Bonaventure in the Fairhill/West Kensington section of Philadelphia .

Sadly, however, the parishes were closed by the Archdiocese in 1993.

The sisters were loath to leave and feared that the parish closings would contribute to the poverty-related ills of the neighborhood. As a result, Sr. Nancy Hagenbach and Sr. Peggy Doherty founded Providence Center in the fall of 1993. Located in this same section of Philadelphia as St. Edward and St. Bonaventure were, Providence Center continues to serve the community by providing:

• Summer Program
• English as a Second Language Classes
• Sewing Class
• Family Retreats
• Women’s Prayer Group and Retreats
• Home Visiting
