Last month, high school students from the Holy Child Network of Schools traveled to New York City to volunteer at the sixth annual Camp Cornelia.

From July 9 – 17, the high school students taught a variety of subjects including art, geography, math, music and reading at Cornelia Connelly Center, located on the Lower East Side in Manhattan. The Center, founded by the Holy Child Sisters, provides middle-school education to girls in grades 5 to 8 from low-income families.

In advance of the camp, the volunteers from five Holy Child Schools — Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac, MD; Cornelia Connelly School of the Holy Child Jesus in Anaheim, CA; Mayfield Senior School of the Holy Child Jesus in Pasadena, CA; Oak Knoll School of the Holy Child in Summit, NJ, and School of the Holy Child Rye in Rye, NY — spent weeks collaborating and preparing lesson plans using Skype and Google Docs.

Students also spent time together in the days before and after camp exploring the city and learning more about one another. During the week, students visited the 9/11 Memorial Museum, enjoyed a dinner in Washington Square Park and took in a matinee performance of “Fiddler on the Roof.”
