An update from Casa Cornelia Law Center….
Each week, clients of all ages, genders, ethnic origins, and life experiences arrive at Casa Cornelia Law Center (CCLC) with stories of pain and injustice. While Casa Cornelia is all too often compelled to share our clients’ painful stories, the Center is equally compelled to share their successes. Many have achieved personal and professional accomplishments, including two women who have inspired us to remain steadfast in our mission to provide legal services to those most in need.
Martha survived years of domestic abuse at the hands of the father of her children. From threats of physical violence to imprisonment in her home, Martha persevered and eventually sought assistance from CCLC. Five years later, she received her visa and began working with a carpet cleaning company. Her work ethic and positive demeanor immediately pleased the company’s customers. And after three years with the company, she decided to purchase an industrial carpet cleaner and start a business. Today, Martha’s business thrives due to her commitment to work, fairness, and forward thinking. She loves being self-employed. Most important, Martha serves as a model to her two sons: she represents hope and success in the face of major adversity. CCLC is proud to be one of Martha’s customers.
In Mexico, Sara was repeatedly threatened as a teenager and an adult for being transgender. After she was violently attacked and lost her leg, she crossed the border into the United States and asked for asylum. Sara became a client of CCLC, and in February 2015, after many months of detention and five years of legal proceedings, her asylum petition was granted. Sara emailed this response when the petition was granted: “I love this country so much! It’s funny how I appreciate everything, even the smallest things, like just looking out my window in the mornings and seeing America outside. It’s an amazing and wonderful feeling! I’m so, so happy and grateful! I could go on and on!”
