At Cristo Rey St. Martin (CRSM), the college preparation process for juniors and seniors begins at the start of the school year. College counselors Sharon Holdvogt and Ana Aguilar, along with a team of volunteers, work diligently to guide students through the search, application, and acceptance process. Armed with spreadsheets, weekly seminars, college visits, and input from college representatives, CRSM’s counseling department prepares seniors to apply to college by winter break.

“From August through October, we meet with seniors multiple times one-on-one,” said Ana Aguilar. “We reassure students that every workshop has a purpose and to trust the process. You’re not alone.”

Preparation begins in junior year when students draft personal statements in English classes and explore affordable summer college programs. By senior year, students are well-prepared for the college application process. Sharon reflects, “We are in awe each year as a new class goes through this. It’s important to remember it’s their first time, and it’s powerful to witness their excitement and stress.”

Volunteers also assist students. Jeanie has volunteered for nearly a decade and helps students write essays and prepare applications. “Every student I’ve met is motivated and appreciative. The school has done something right,” she says, praising the English teachers for preparing students well.

Thanks to CRSM’s counseling program, 100% of seniors were accepted into a four-year college for the fifth consecutive year, with 97% accepted into three or more programs—proof of the school’s commitment to student success.
