Washington School for Girls is a co-sponsored ministry of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus

Schools across the country are grappling with how to manage cell phone use in schools. While often a distraction, some parents worry about being unable to communicate with their child during an emergency. WSG students recently weighed in on the issue during a special feature on WTOP, a local news radio station serving the Washington, D.C. area. The segment aired on the radio and was published online with an accompanying video.
Eighth graders Aziza and Carleon spoke with local anchor Mike Murillo about their perspectives on WSG’s no-phone policy. Every morning, students deposit their cellphones in a secure phone locker and retrieve them when they depart. Between classes, during lunch and recess, and any other free time, students are expected to be mindfully present in our community. And according to Aziza and Carleon, it helps them stay focused in class, avoid distractions, and connect with their peers. “It makes a big difference because you’re able to just focus on your work and learn new things without being distracted by social media,” Carleon shared during the interview. They also shared how much they appreciate interacting with their classmates without always having their phones in their hands.
Both students have been thinking about the impact of life with their phones. Carleon’s 8th grade capstone project is about social media use and mental health among teen girls. Aziza is interested in communications careers and will be attending a specialized journalism and media program at Archbishop Carroll High School next year.
